“Keep an eye on this one. They are going to be turning down acquisition offers left and right. They’ve just attacked the other half of web search.” — TechCrunch

I don’t think this site will blow up anytime soon.   Some fringe, social=media-power-users will give it some hype, at first.  Others may try it out and say, “cool tool,” but quickly lose interest in it because they have no need to search their social media histories.  (They are living in the now.)  While the rest of the populous will see no need to experiment in the first place.

My greatest concern is privacy.  I gave them access to all of my accounts.  They have my username and password to everything!  (Fortunately, I don’t have anything to hide and nothing to lose.)  If there ever was a breach of security, the site would immediately be pressured into shutting down forever.

One Response to Greplin — Google for Social Media

  1. Security was my main concern at the time as well. From what I gathered they also had pretty high infrastructure costs & trouble converting users to paying customers.

The problem they solved is as, if not more, relevant today as it was back then, with the number of services in use increasing. To this end, I’ve been working on which does the same thing as Greplin, but via a browser extension without needing access to your data.

Would be great if you could try it out and let me know what you think!
